This painting is my memory and interpretation of a view of the estuary marsh in the late summer afternoon. The clouds are starting to build and rain will soon follow.

Pastel on UArt - 12x18

I was inspired by a painting I had completed a few years ago, but the design and atmosphere of the smaller painting inspired me to give it a larger treatment.  The original was done with warm grays for the approach of a summer storm, but since it is winter now, I wanted to give the painting a sense of the coming cold using a cooler, more blue palette.

My goal was to retain the loose, billowy clouds and add a touch of drama by using my strokes to indicate a sense of the on-rushing storm.  I wanted to contrast that movement with the perfect stillness of the beach by keeping the reflections on the wet sand smooth capturing the color of the clouds without the movement.

The rain has passed, and the sun is coming up painting the sky and water with vivid colors. The first visitors on the beach are rewarded with a special display of color and the pristine surface of the sand.  Even the seagulls are content to wait and enjoy the beauty of the dawn.

This view of South Ponte Vedra Beach is built to show the repetition with variation of the many lines and forms that make up the coastline vista.

Storm Break

This sunrise view of Jacksonville Beach was inspired by the breaking cloud of a passing winter storm front.  The wind is up, mist shrouds the distant shore, and the surf is till choppy.  At this moment, the sun has broken through to paint a streak of the beach with color an promise.  
I used mostly Terry Ludwig pastels for this painting.

Dawn Beach Walk

Before the sun peeks above the horizon, it paints the sky with glorious, amazing colors.  The reflected light turns the beach to copper, while the wet sand mirrors the pink and gold of the clouds.  This is the best time to come out the walk in the flat hard sand, but only a few share these joys.
