Dawn Beach Walk

Before the sun peeks above the horizon, it paints the sky with glorious, amazing colors.  The reflected light turns the beach to copper, while the wet sand mirrors the pink and gold of the clouds.  This is the best time to come out the walk in the flat hard sand, but only a few share these joys.

Even in the winter, the rising sun paints the sky and the beach in radiant color.  I have tried to capture those colors with this view of Jacksonville Beach just before the sun comes up.  In the chilly days of February as the rain passes and day begins, the sense of stillness and color is exceptionally vibrant.  The dampness deepens all the colors of the winter grasses, and the rising light paints the shadows on the sand with deep purple.

A few days ago I had to drive to the beach early in the morning.  The sun was just coming up, the colors in the sky reflected in the water, the ground fog held to the edges of the salt marsh, and the balance and peace of the scene was spectacular.  I had no time for sketching, but I stopped on the shoulder of the expressway to take a few reference photos.  I wanted to capture the air of stillness, expectancy, and the brilliant colors that promised great things for the day.
