26A001 - Line and Wash Beach Sunrise - ACEO

26A001 - ACEO

ACEO - line and watercolor on archival paper

This ACEO (2.5x3.5) painting is an original, line and wash view of the dunes and sea oats looking across the beach to the sea and morning clouds.  I love the freshness of the unmarked sand with the breeze from the water before the heat of the day.

I have included a photo of the painting in my hand and an image of the reverse with my signature and a Bible verse - "The joy of the Lord is my strength."  Nehemiah 8:10.

This painting is available on eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/327051540570 - copy and paste the link.  Thanks.

Radiance

Radiance

Pastel on UArt 12x18

I have always been intrigued by the colors and contrasts of the beach in the early morning. After the sun has come up it can often become partially shielded by the passing clouds.  As the sun peeks around the clouds, the colors come alive. The shadows in the dunes and among the grass and shrubs of the beach take on a glow of blue and lavender, and the diffused light of the sun casts a glorious radiance over the sky, the water, and the sand that lifts my thoughts and praises to the Lord my Creator.

I reworked this painting to "fix" some weaknesses in composition and soften some edges.

Dune Sweep

Ink and Watercolor wash, 7x5

The constant wind sweeps the dunes moving the sand ever and ever on, but the lines of sea oats hold the dune in place.  Their sculpted edges and shifting shadows are an ever-changing work of art.

Dune Morning

Pastel, 12x16

This old path between the dunes leading to the beach has always inspired me.  The softness of the warm sand, the gentle green of the shrubs and sea oats, the beach all to yourself, and endless horizon over the water - what more would you want?

Daily Painting, 2018 05 15

Pastel, Daily Painting, Double matted - 4x6

The idea for this small study is the openness of the beach late in the day with only a few visitors strolling while the sea gulls wait for the tide to come in.

These paintings will be available through my gallery - Georgia Nick Gallery in St. Augustine, or they may be purchased from me directly.  Please see my web site for details. Click here for details.

Daily Paintings - April 12, 2018

Pastel - Daily Paintings 4x6 in double mat

I have taken a challenge to paint a number of small pastels that can be mounted in mat to fit a 5x7 frame.  These 4 paintings are my first set of this series.
I have deliberately chosen a limited palette to be used in each of the paintings for today.  That will keep the colors coordinated and keep the set unified.  I selected 4 very different  views of the beach, water, and dunes in order to express the variety of scenery and yet show the unity of the experience.
These paintings will be available through my gallery - Georgia Nick Gallery in St. Augustine, or they may be purchased from me directly.  Please see my web site for details. Rick Petersen Artist.

First Light, Vilano Beach

Pastel, 9x12 on UArt 400

In the early morning as the light of day begins to grow, the reflected pink and golden clouds bath the wet sand and breaking waves with wonder.  A few gulls seem to question the presence of any who venture into their world of wonder.

Early Evening

Pastel, 9x12 on UArt

With the departing day, the sunset over the beach and water rewards the few who remain into the evening.

Stages

Pastel, 9x6 on UArt

In the afternoon, the early summer clouds begin to move in from the southwest in stages. They march in by ranks, each new bank of clouds running into the sea breeze until they finally pile up, overcome the breeze with their numbers, and move on past the beach.

Expectations

Pastel, 9x12

In the early morning, as the tide starts to move in, the sea gulls gather expecting the waves to bring them breakfast.  I selected this one gull from among many because of his frozen, unmoving gaze, expecting good things for the day.

Nocturne in Blue

Pastel, 6x9 on UArt

The full moon paints the dark clouds with light from within.  As Moses wrote, this is "the lesser light to rule the night" (Genesis 1:16).
This painting began as a study in composition.  I am trying to incorporate Edgar Payne's composition patterns that work with the unbroken horizontal lines of the Florida beaches.  My first efforts have been with what Payne calls the "steel yard" composition which is a balance between large and small vertical elements on opposite sides of the painting.  In order to simplify the elements, I selected a moon-lit night scene.  I wanted the clouds to form the two important structures and the reflection of the moon to serve as the fulcrum on which the elements are balanced.

Late Walk

Pastel, 6x9 on UArt

Number 20 of '21 in 21' Cloud Challenge

As the evening colors begin to show over the broad beach at low tide, a few visitors have come to share their evening in peace and wonder at the end of the day.  The wet sand of the retreating tide leaves a tableau on which the scattered clouds cast their fading reflections.
This painting is available - $95 unframed, with $10 shipping. To purchase this painting, click on the link to "Late Walk."

Day Begins

Pastel, 6x9 on UArt

Number 14 of '21 in 21' Cloud Challenge

As the first light begins to show in the clouds and a few visitors venture out to the fresh, wet sand, the day at the beach begins.  I conceived this painting as an exercise to show that even a nearly cloudless sky can hold interest and challenges.

Breaking Day

Pastel, 6x9 on UArt

Number 08 of '21 in 21' Karen Margulis challenge

For this study, I combined elements of several photos with a little imagination and license.  I wanted to capture the fleeting moment when the sun breaks through the morning clouds and paints one golden streak across the beach.

Last Light

Pastel, 6x9 on UArt

Number 07 of '21 in 21' Karen Margulis challenge

The wind has died to a soft breeze, and the sun has retreated beyond the horizon. The last few touches of light brush the tops of the clouds, and the broad, wet sand reflects the splashes of light and color.  The best show of the day happens after everyone has gone.

Dawn Beach Walk

Pastel - 12x18 on UArt

Before the sun peeks above the horizon, it paints the sky with glorious, amazing colors.  The reflected light turns the beach to copper, while the wet sand mirrors the pink and gold of the clouds.  This is the best time to come out the walk in the flat hard sand, but only a few share these joys.

Spring, Windy and Hazy

Revised painting - 4/21/16

Original Plein Air Painting

Pastel, 6x9 on UArt 400

I took my plein air box to South Ponte Vedre Beach and set up my easel in edge of the dunes.  The wind was stiff and the sun was distant and hazy, but the colors were brilliant.  The dunes are protected here by the state park and they line up in a long row back from the beach.  At low tide, the pink and golden sand creates a warm border between the deep gray-green of the grass and the blue and churning white of the water.

Winter Eveing Walk

Mixed Media - 4x6

Ink, Watercolor, and Pastel on Arches Watercolor Paper

This small study of the beach in winter was done to capture the colors and atmosphere of the wide beach at low tide.  A few hearty souls have ventured out for a walk.
The painting is mainly watercolor over ink with a few highlights and colors added with light touches of pastel.

Wet Sand, Wet Feet

Pastel on UArt, 6x9

When the tide is out, the wet, hard sand reflects the scattered clouds and deep blue sky. As the tide starts to come in, we may get our feet wet, but that's good too.
This painting was done to demonstrate painting scattered clouds and blue sky, and I added  the beach to give the clouds a sense of time and place.
