As the storm builds and advances, blocking the setting sun, there are few people left on the beach to appreciate the color and drama.
This is a rework of an earlier painting.  My inspiration was the bright white that outlines the clouds when the sun is behind them and the brilliant colors that diffuse through them.

This is a "rework" of one element of an exercise I had done earlier.  The result from the previous effort left the sky too brick-red and lifeless.  I am in the process of filing and categorizing my works, and some are being reworked.

When evening falls across the marsh, the shadows grow long and purple creeps into the clouds.  The few last rays of sunlight gild the grass as their final gift to the day before making way for the peacefulness of the night.

Number 19 of '21 in 21' Cloud Challenge

Over the salt marsh, the rain clouds begin to build at the end of the day.  The sea breeze from the east dies away and the clouds begin to move in from the west.  In that stillness, the setting sun paints the clouds with gold and and lavender and mutes some of the bright green of the marsh grass.

As the day comes to a close, the clouds seem to fall to tatters of wisps and puffs.  The crowds of the day have gone leaving the peace and beauty of this late hour to the few who remain for a private showing of the glories of the evening.

The wind has died to a soft breeze, and the sun has retreated beyond the horizon. The last few touches of light brush the tops of the clouds, and the broad, wet sand reflects the splashes of light and color.  The best show of the day happens after everyone has gone.

Painting 05 for Karen Margulis' Challenge

This started as a cloud sketch, but I couldn't leave it there.  I was inspired by the colors and shadows across the salt marsh in the late afternoon.  The sunset colors are just beginning to show and the whole scene explodes with joy.

Tide Water Evening

This view of the clouds over the tide water was begun as an exercise in Karen Margulis' workshop.  I was only able to do the clouds in the time we had.  I added the landscape and water in my studio.
With this view of the marsh, I wanted to capture the exuberance of the evening sky with the expectation of coming rain.

Winter Eveing Walk

This small study of the beach in winter was done to capture the colors and atmosphere of the wide beach at low tide.  A few hearty souls have ventured out for a walk.
The painting is mainly watercolor over ink with a few highlights and colors added with light touches of pastel.

Evening Walk, Study

The last light of the day paints the sky with gold and lavender which is reflected in the wet sand and broken waves.  The beach is nearly deserted in the evening after the tourists and families with children have gone. As the light falls and the temperature drops, this is the perfect time to come out for a stroll on the beach.

Expectations - Revision

"Expectation" Pastel on UArt - completed February 2014.

This painting, though pleasing, seemed to lack something. It was just there with nothing special.

I started my examination by creating a smaller, 5x7, with ink and watercolor on paper to explore new colors, forms, and values.

My first step was to do an ink line drawing from the original.

 

Over this ink sketch I added watercolor indicate the continuation of the pinks and lavenders into the salt marsh to replace some of the green.

 

Adding the color to the clouds, pointed out another basic difficulty with the original piece - that is that the bottoms of the clouds are all too flat.  The study, however, was too far along to make changes in either the drawing or the watercolor, so I sprayed the watercolor with fixative and applied a layer of clear gesso. This will help support substantial revisions when I apply the pastel.

 

 

"Evneing Clouds" - gave this 5x7 and new name.

This is the final rework of the 5x7.  I reduced the clouds by about 1/3, softened all the edges, expanded the water in the foreground, and reduced the colors to 3 - blue, orange, and purple (with just a touch of pink). Then I added just a little green for contrast and punched up the colors and values in the salt marsh.  Took a new photo which is much better.
