This ACEO (2.5x3.5) painting is an original, line and wash view of the dunes and sea oats looking across the beach to the sea and morning clouds.  I love the freshness of the unmarked sand with the breeze from the water before the heat of the day.

I have included a photo of the painting in my hand and an image of the reverse with my signature and a Bible verse - "The joy of the Lord is my strength."  Nehemiah 8:10.

Daybreak

The showers of the night are passing and the dark clouds begin to scatter.  Just before the sun breaches the horizon, the clouds cast their soft colors in glorious reflections on the broad, wet sand.

As the first light begins to show in the clouds and a few visitors venture out to the fresh, wet sand, the day at the beach begins.  I conceived this painting as an exercise to show that even a nearly cloudless sky can hold interest and challenges.

Marsh Colors, Autumn

My desire with this painting is to present the colors of autumn in the early morning.  In that brief moment as day waits before the sun climbs into the sky, the colors on the marsh seem to blaze with an inner fire.  The shadows are muted and indistinct, and the sharp details are diminished to bring the whole scene into a sense of expectation for the day ahead.

September Wave

At the end of summer, the prevailing wind turns to the southwest, and the swells come in from a flat ocean.  They normally break in regular succession on the beach, but every so often a large sell comes in and rolls over the smaller waves that have come before.  I call these "September Waves."

9/22/15 - My wife Patty observed that I needed something to fill the big empty void in the middle of the painting.  After some thought, I agreed and added some sea gulls.  I like the addition.

Invitation

Pastel on Wallis, 13x20


This view of the beach through the half-buried boardwalk bordered by winter-bare sea oats presented an irresistible invitation to come and walk on the wet sand.  I took several photographs of this scene of the beach on a calm, brisk morning in December, and I chose this particular view because all the major lines point to the single breaking wave as the main point of interest.

Second photo of work in progress. Looking now for values, consistency, and faithfulness to my original objective and motivation.

 

First photo of work in progress.  Railings were put in with calculated accuracy to insure the perspective.  Darkest values are hard pastel set with denatured alcohol. Sky and water are basically done.  Values in the sand were put in to set the tone and perspective.

Sunrise 1

Sketch - 12 pastels in 12 minutes

This view of the sunrise at Jacksonville Beach has intrigued me for quite some time, so I finally decided to try doing it in pastels.  I started with a much-cropped view and a limited palette in order to simplify the design and colors.

I hope this will develop into a larger, more detailed work while keeping the freshness I see in this sketch.

"Early Start"

This was a quick "sketch" to capture a fleeting impression.  I did this painting from a single reference photo and some notes.  The picture was taken across the bay from Cape San Blas while I was on an outing there with my father-in-law to renew our memories of younger days spent fishing at this place.

The colors and time of day are the early morning before the sun us up.  Everything is still, and the distant shore and the sky are purple and gold.
