ACEO - Dune Breezes

This bright, little ACEO painting captures a view of the dunes that stand next to the beach.  The sea breezes keep the long seed heads dancing as the clouds and seagulls race past on the wind.

Palm Bay, Study

In this view, I have tried to capture the sense of the expanse of the marsh as it appears through the opening between the groves of palms where the fresh empties into the marsh.  The summer haze softens the colors and edges of the distance but intensifies the nearby shadows.  I did this painting as a study in preparation of a larger work, but I like it enough to let it stand on its own.

Remembered

Watercolor 7x5

While away from home this week, I was able to complete this small watercolor view of Lake Ray at the Jacksonville Arboretum.  The foundation for the painting was a photo on my phone from a recent paint-out, but the final work was done as a reconstruction of memories.  It is from those memories that I assigned this piece the title, "Remembered."  I gave this painting with deep gratitude to my son and his family for their most gracious hospitality during our visit.

This small work is an view through the dunes to the beach. The path is marked by these two palm trees.  The painting was done with water media over an ink drawing.  I find working that way solidifies my ideas and focuses my vision.

Dune Passage

In the early morning as I walk on the beach, I often turn to look at the dunes, and the bright light has painted the sand and grasses with broad washes of color in blues, golds, and greens.  This small path through the dunes was my passage to the beach - my escape from the "other world" of duties and troubles.

July Palms

Pastel, Ink, and Watercolor

Palm trees and the salt marsh have become a favority theme for me.  These two paintings of palm trees on the salt marsh were done by doing a sketch in Chinese ink, shading and coloring it with watercolor, and then adding the values, color, and detail with pastels.

This project started with sketches on my white board.

Both painting have been sold.

 Then I added the Chinese ink in broad outlines of the subject.

Next I added the color tones and suggestions with watercolor.

Finally, this is what the whole process looked like.

Dunes, Talbot Island

I started this painting from sketches and photos last night late. The first step was to do the drawing in ink and finalize the composition.  This morning when the paper was dry, I added the color.

This scene is a view of the dunes that captures the exuberance and organized confusion of nature.

Two Friends

After a day of running and other obligations, at about 9:30 I was able to get to my studio.  I had to try out some new sumi brushes.  I didn't know how worn out my old ones had gotten.  I like the result, but the lighting was bad, the battery on my camera was giving out, had no flash, picture is not the best....  I'll take a better one in the morning, but I wanted to post something tonight.

In this painting, I added some splashes of color to indicate the ubiquitous gaillardia among the golden sea oats.

This photo was taken in available light. A better photo will replace it in the morning.

Here are my trophies from Iowa.  These were done inside from sketches because the rain seemed to be constant.  I was trying out a new Watercolro Sketch Book.  I like the results.

Path Beside the Water

I had a few minutes late this evening, and I got out some old washi paper.  I wanted to see how it took the ink and color.  This is the experiment and expression.  Perhaps the last few days are expressed in the path over the bridge, up the stairs, and into the unseen distance.

This was a day filled with distractions, but I managed to work this sketch in late in the afternoon.  I wanted to show the tree trunk as foundation and project the branch into the foreground.  I think it works.

In this study, I added a pine cone - something I haven't done for years.  It's like renewing old friendships.

The color balance on this photo is a little too blue/green.  There is a storm coming and the light was not good.  I'll retake this later if it seems appropriate.

I added color to an ink study of two palm trees and the scrub cedars on the marsh. Study was done quickly for effect not detail. I like the effect, so I signed and dated the pieces.

My grandsons are with us through the week-end, but they are at the neighbors pool this afternoon. I've done a little more work on this, but I wanted to step back and pause, before I declare it "fini!"
