"Winter Waves" 4x6 watercolor and pastel on Arches. This view of the surf at Vilano Beach was inspired by my photographs and videos after a recent storm. The air was crisp and wind had died, but the waves were spectacular.

The steep curve of the dunes held in place by the sea oats with the sea gulls overhead is a setting that reminds me to delight in the Lord who cares for me.

Morning Light, 2

In the late morning, the spring colors of green are set against the reds and browns of the winter, and a few deep shadows still fall on the sand.  The wind and sun brighten the water with foam and reflections.
I added a few touches of pastel to add brightness and drama to the colors. 

Tomoka River Palms

The palms that grow on the edge of the Tamoka River seldom grow straight but bend and in unusual ways.  This trio of palms appear to be engaged in a twisting, exotic dance.

Marsh Between the Dunes

At Anastasia St. Park, a wide marsh sits between the old set of dunes and the new dunes on the beach.  This painting is a view across the marsh to the beach dunes at mid-day. The sun is almost directly overhead, and the few shadows are small and deep blue/purple.
This painting is a study for working out the composition, values, and colors for a larger painting.

Over the Top

The dunes rise in ranks coming back from the beach.  From the top of the tallest one, the path descends to the wet sand and waves.

Storm Rising

When the winds of early summer blow from the ocean, the clouds roll in and the storms begin to rise.  The old sand fence and the beach daisies hold their place, while the sea oats bend with the wind.

Pablo Creek, 3

This is a view of a bend in Pablo Creek where the creek widens and the banks have been cleared of debris by the recent rains.  The slanting sunlight throws a spotlight on the tree on the edge of the water.

Breaking Close

Following a winter storm, the clouds depart, the wind falls, and beach is bathed with bright sunlight.  At high tide the waves break close to the shore.

Stormy Beach

As the storms of winter pass, the sand fence and sea oats show that they have done their job in holding back the waves.  As the color returns to the sky and water, the old dunes rejoice.

The lowest branches of the tall, old pine tree are bent and gnarled with age.  They provide a perfect resting place for the forest birds that pass.

Dawn Palms, Study

When the sun first breaks on the marsh, the palm trees and the small islands are painted with special colors.  The shadows hold the deep blue of the night, but the grasses glow with the fire of the coming day.

The sun is the brightest and the wind always seems to be freshest on the top of the dunes.  The fine sand is an irresistible invitation to come down to the beach.

January Mist, Study

January is a season of rain which often settles as a light, penetrating mist.  As the temperature falls, and the day turns to evening, the landscape become more indistinct and filled with shadows.  Things that are near become dark masses and strange shapes, and the distances fades away into mere suggestions in purple and gray.

Morning Colors, Study

In the early morning after a night of rain, the surf is up, the air is clear, and the color of the morning paints the dunes with its own shade of lavender.  I love this time before anyone else has time to leave foot prints in the sand.

Beach Path, 2

The paths to the beach often lead between houses on Jacksonville Beach.  On this particular path, the old cement garden wall on one side and a palm tree in the corner of the next-door yard create a dramatic entrance to the bright sunlight of the beach and surf.

Florida Palm, Study

This is a representation of a palm tree that stands near a causeway to the beach.  It stands along on a little islet surrounded by salt marsh and water.  In the early morning it provides a striking contrast against the distant lines of trees and marsh.

I do these paintings in this size so that they will fit a standard 4x6 photo frame.

I have begun a series of small watercolor paintings, of which this painting is the first, that I hope will serve two purposes.

1.  I plan to use these paintings as the foundation for larger works in pastel or watercolor.  In these studies, I will explore color and composition seeking to express a more open and liberal interpretation of the subjects.

2.  I will offer these studies on eBay for a low opening bid and free shipping in an effort to find greater exposure for my work and to enlarge my e-mail base for my newsletter by adding people who have purchased my work.
