"Breaking Late"

When storms have made the slope of the beach more steep, the waves break later and closer to shore. This is what I have tried to capture in this painting. The sky is overcast, and there are no clear reflections. The water color seems to be more green and gray.

I have done waves several times in pastel, but this is my first effort in oil. I am pleased with the result, and encouraged to do more seascapes in oil.

This is another study of the a palm thicket and the dunes at Cape San Blas. The painting began as a sketch and water color. I have tried to capture the heat and bright sun of a summer morning. The painting is oil on canvas panel.

This is a view of the secluded beach and dunes near where my son Rod, my father-in-law, and I spent many, many hours fishing.

A personal note:

As a painting progresses toward completion, it seems often to take a life of its own. It moves steadily away from the view before me and even away from my original intention. I do not know if this is a result of my inner "natural artistic eye" or the product of my artistic inability together with some conscious or even unconscious compensations. In either case, I am pleased with this result even as it has moved beyond my original scene and impression.

My grandsons are with us through the week-end, but they are at the neighbors pool this afternoon. I've done a little more work on this, but I wanted to step back and pause, before I declare it "fini!"

It has been some days since I've posted anything. My 3 grandsons are spending two weeks with us, so time at the easel is scarce.

Looking Back II

I have finished a watercolor view of the old Beach Boulevard draw bridge from JTB Boulevard. The bridge has been replace, but I have several drawings and reference photos of it. I have many fond memories of this view and the times spent at this site.

Unfortunately, I loaned my good camera to my daughter for the weekend. This picture was taken with an old camera that doesn't always focus well or capture the right colors.

I'm back from taking care of my parents through Dad's health issues. After more than two weeks away from my easel, it's good to get back to work.



Here is a quick water color of the salt marsh looking back toward the old Beach Boulevard Draw Bridge. I am looking to do a larger work of this view in oil.



I did the last two paintings on a "harder" surfaced watercolor paper. It's new to me, and takes some getting used to.

Taking some time off...

I just found out that my dad is having surgery to repair/replace his main aorta valve on Tuesday. I will probably not be posting any art work for a week or more.
